The teenager was discovered by an agent in a shopping mall at the age of 14 while on a school trip to São Paulo. In 1994, a model instructor took Gisele to São Paulo to give the teen beauty a chance to model in a big city and to be shown off to Brazilian Elite agents. She was selected for a national contest, in which she came second. She went on to come fourth in a worldwide modelling contest held in Ibiza.

In 1996, Gisele moved to New York to begin her modelling career, where she debuted at Fashion Week. She has since become the cover girl of choice for modelling gigs around the world – the Brazilian beauty is the face and body of more than 20 international brands, and has been splashed across more than 500 magazine covers.
