OK! sits down with 16-year-old Reece Mastin the morning after his big X Factor win to talk squealing fans, competing with Guy, and what he plans to do next…
Has it sunk in yet?
No, it’s still sinking in, but I’ll get there soon.
It’s your birthday tomorrow, happy birthday!
Yes, all grown up!
Could you ever have imagined a better birthday present?
No, this is the best birthday present ever. You can try and beat it, but I doubt it.
Are you going to celebrate your birthday in any particular way?
No, I’m going to Melbourne to start recording so I don’t think I’m going to have a party or anything, but we’ll have to see.
You were in the bottom two a few weeks ago, was that playing on your mind when you were standing up there last night?
Yes, of course it was. I mean, Andrew had never been in the bottom two for a good reason; he’s incredible. It was quite nerve-racking, but the result came through and it was good for me.
Did you think that maybe Andrew would take it out?
Yeah, I mean, a 1 per cent margin is not a lot at all, is it. So it could have gone either way. He’s such a lovely man as well. He’s so nice.
Is it strange to have girls squealing over you?
Yes, it is. Though I’m not going to say I hate it.
Have you had any crazy fan encounters?
I have. Mum and I were driving home from the studio and we had some people try and jump through the window of the car as we drove past.
Your new single is out now, and so is Guy’s. Have you got a little competition going on there?
Yes. Last night my single went to number one and his was number two, and I was like ‘Yeah Guy, I knocked you off!’ We were having a little laugh about it, but he even said to me that he was really proud of me, so it was all good.
What was it like to sing with Kylie Minogue?
Oh, it was amazing. She’s incredible. I’m honoured to be able to sing with someone like her.
Did she give you any career advice?
Yes, she just said I should stay true to myself and not to try and change. I know I’ve got to adapt, but, ultimately, I have to stay true to myself.
You’re from England originally, have you heard anything about them listening to you over there?
Yes, I was on BBC News in England for the win, which is really cool. I’m glad to be getting support back there.
Are you planning on going international as soon as you can?
Yes, I’d love to go play some shows in England and hopefully America, so we’ll see how quickly we can get across there.
Will you stay in school, or seize this opportunity while you can?
We’re going to take it as we go and try and get as big as we can.
Speaking about school, there’s been talk about you going to Christina Parie’s school formal with her, is that true?
No, I haven’t heard about that. A few people have asked me about that but not Christina.
Have you spoken to her since you won?
Yeah, we talked at the wrap party. She voted for me, so I’m happy with that.
Any plans on doing a duet with her?
Yes, we should do a rock duet together, I reckon.
Would you recommend going on X Factor to other kids your age?
Yes, for sure. It changed my life and I’m sure it could change theirs.
What’s next for you?
I’m just going to record some music, get it out there and get on the road. We’re doing the journey album, which is all the songs on the show. That should be out before Christmas, and then I think early next year I will get a new album out with some original stuff on it.
