Rebel Rebel

Self-confessed ‘westie’ Rebel Wilson dishes on her new movie-star life and hanging with Hollywood’s A-list
Rebel Wilson

Rebel Wilson first became familiar to Aussie audiences in her role as the hugely stereotyped Greek girl, Toula, in Fat Pizza.

Her next foray onto our TV screens was as a politically incorrect teenager in Bogan Pride – which she not only wrote but also starred in.

Cut to 2011, and the star pops up in the runaway Judd Apatow hit Bridesmaids – then proceeds to book another six movies, all of which will be out this year!

First up is A Few Best Men, in which she plays Daphne, the ‘lesbian’ sister of bride Mia (Laura Brent), who’s marrying English backpacker David (Xavier Samuel) at her parents’ house in the Blue Mountains.

Hilarity ensues when David’s loser mates misplace the family’s prized lamb and find themselves in possession of stolen drugs.

Don’t miss Olivia Newton-John’s perfect comic timing in this Aussie feast from The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert director Stephan Elliott.

‘Olivia is so funny,’ laughs Rebel, who affectionately calls her co-star ‘Mumsy’, and says the two spent their time together singing Grease megamixes. ‘That’s when she wasn’t pushing me up the hill walking to the set. She’s really into fitness!’

When OK! caught up with Rebel, she was just about to head off to the Sundance Film Festival in Utah, where she’s sharing a house with Isla Fisher and Kirsten Dunst. ‘I have quite a lot of celebrity numbers in my phone,’ reveals Rebel. ‘I just call up and I’m like, "Heyyy…"’

Rebel, you’re a Hollywood superstar now! How much has your life changed?
It’s crazy how much it’s changed in such a short period of time – from living in the western suburbs of Sydney to having this Hollywood lifestyle, filming all around America and having six movies come out in 2012!

Wow!
Yeah, it’s come a long way from the days of Fat Pizza, where I wore my own tracksuit and bought my own accessories from Kmart.

So what’s your Hollywood lifestyle like?
Well, I’m trying to be healthier now so I go hiking in the morning in the Hollywood Hills, but I don’t have a tiny annoying dog just yet. Because I work a lot as a writer as well as an actress, which means I’m triple more valuable, I’ll do some writing then go out to lunch, meet so and so, and there’s some hanging out at night.

Is everyone sucking up to you now?
I get a few calls – ‘Hi, remember me? I was in fourth grade with you. I’m coming to America, can I stay with you?’ ‘Umm, no!’ [Laughs]

You’re too busy hanging with A-listers now…
Well, next week I’m at Sundance and I’m sharing a house on the ski fields with Kirsten Dunst and Isla Fisher, so that’s pretty cool. We’ll have a fun time there. When I was at law school I worked on the weekends at a movie cinema – it was just a few years ago I was thinking, ‘Wow, wouldn’t it be great to get in a Judd Apatow movie’, and then… bang! The first movie I booked was Bridesmaids, and all of a sudden I’m in that gang.
