Hugh Jackman opens up about his wife’s miscarriages

Hugh Jackman, 44, has opened up about his painful battle to have children with his wife Deborra-Lee Furness, 57, revealing that she had several heartbreaking miscarriages in the early years of their marriage.

Hugh has always spoken candidly about the couple's decision to adopt their two children, son Oscar, 12, and daughter Ava, seven, after they struggled to conceive naturally.

However, he has now talked about the couple's long struggle with unsuccessful in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatments, urging other couples to talk more openly about the trauma they suffer along the way.

‘Biologically, obviously, we tried and it was not happening for us and it is a difficult time,’ he says. ‘We did IVF and Deb had a couple of miscarriages. I'll never forget it, the miscarriage thing – it happens to one in three pregnancies, but it's very, very rarely talked about. It's almost secretive, so I hope Deb doesn't mind me bringing it up now... It's a good thing to talk about it. It's more common and it is tough. There's a grieving that you have to go through.’

Hugh insists the pain of the failed treatments disappeared as soon as he held his son for the first time, adding, ‘You can't prepare for that moment. Nothing can prepare you. You can't even explain how incredible it is and that avalanche of emotion that comes and how it opens up your heart, how it frustrates you, how it angers you, how everything is just… how alive you are as a parent.’
